NUJ Presidency: Ex-NUJ Chairmen Challenge Odusile, Six Candidates Up Against Him

Six candidates have been cleared to contest the presidency of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

National President of NUJ, Waheed Odusile who was elected three years ago in Abuja is seeking reelection against some former state chairmen of the Union.

Contestants for the office of President as released from the secretariat of the Union include the incumbent, Abdulwaheed Odusile, former Ondo State NUJ Chairman, Dele Atunbi, Osun State NUJ Chair, Olalere Abiodun George, Former Edo State Chairman Otunba Mike Aladenika, Chris Isiguzo, Uzaka Seiyefa and former Chairman of Abuja Council, Jacob Edi.

A statement by the Chairman and Secretary of the credential committee, Dahiru Garba Mohammed and Abimbola Oyetunde, said 34 people have been screened for the 17 positions available in the national body of the

According to the committee, the forthcoming 2018 (6th Triennial delegates conference and election) of new national officers for the Central Working Committee (CWC) of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) was billed to hold in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from Wednesday – Sunday, September 26 -29, 2018.
Offices for the elections are President, Deputy President, Zonal Vice Presidents and Secretaries (for each of the six Zones), National Treasurer, National Internal Auditor and National Financial Secretary.
The nine-member Credentials Committee has Dahiru Garba Mohammed, General Manager of FRCN Fombina FM, Yola as chairman, Abimbola Oyetunde, General Manager of FRCN Bronze FM, Benin – Secretary with Oliver Ossai as member.

Representatives of the six (6) geo-political zones of the union in the committee are Abba Murtala – Zone A, James Showole – Zone B, Boniface Okoro – Zone C, Ramatu Salami – Zone D, Yusuf Isa – Zone E and Patrick Albert -Zone F.The Credentials Committee, which met in Abuja from Monday -Thursday, August 13-16, 2018, at the National Secretariat of NUJ, after exhaustive screening exercise, gave provisional clearance to 34 candidates to contest for various offices during the forthcoming elections.

“The committee deferred the clearance of one aspirant for insufficient submission of needed employment details, while another was out-rightly disqualified for having not held any office at the state council level.

“Contestants for the office of President are the incumbent, Abdulwaheed Odusile, Dele Atunbi, Olalere Abiodun George, Otunba Mike Aladenika, Chris Isiguzo, Uzaka Seiyefa and Jacob Edi.
“Mukhtar Gidado is the candidate for the office of the Deputy National President, while three candidates – Grace Ijeoma Umeh, Monic Okechukwu and Mohammed, are vying for the office of National Treasurer.

“For the office of the National Internal Auditor are Mohammed Tukur Umar and Mainasara D. Mohammed while the candidate for the office of the National Financial Secretary is Abdulkareem Abiodun.

“Candidates vying for the office of the Vice President of Zone A are Yusuf Idris and Ismail Ammai Maizare, while Adamu Abubakar Gamo and Izma Y. Abdullahi are vying for the office of Secretary of Zone A respectively.
“Zone B candidates for the office of Vice President are Adeyemo S. Prince and Cosmos Olalekan Oni, while the candiadte for the office of Zonal Secretary is Bamigbola Gbolagunte.
Candidates for the office of Vice President of Zone C are Petrus Obi, Ossy Rockyfeller Ogboso, and Innocent Igwe, while for the office of Zonal Secretary, is Kenneth Ofoma.
“Another aspirant for the office, Ngozi Ihekere was disqualified for no previous record of service at the state council level.

“Zone D candidates for the office of Vice President are Wilson Bako and Iliyasu Garba while Fadeyi Babajide Adeolu, who vied for the office of Zonal Secretary of the zone, had his clearance deferred until submission of requisite documents.

“Candidates for the office of the Zonal Vice President of Zone E are Alhassan Y. Abdullah and Peter Mele while Mohammed Saidu and Suleiman Baba Gimba are vying for the office of Zonal Secretary.
“In Zone F, Edward Ogude and Sam Egbala are vying for the office of the Vice President while Bassey Eyoh is the candidate for the office of the Zonal Secretary.

“The committee calls on members of the Union who may have claims and objections against any of the provisionally cleared candidates to forward such petition(s) in writing to the Chairman/Secretary, 2018 NUJ National Credentials Committee via the following email addresses:dgmbativ@gmail.com
and bimbooyetunde@gmail.com not later than August 22, 2018. Petitioners should note that they may be required to appear physically to defend their petitions before the Committee.
