Names are given to the child by the father, mother, grandparents (paternal and maternal) and some close relatives also.

The above narratives captured the personalities of Iba Ganiyu Adams. Iba epitomizes the most celebrated, respectful and the oldest among the Yoruba settings in the ancient days.

His kinsmen, High Chief Olubukun Alabi, the Asiporu Ilepa, Arigidi and Mrs Eunice Ogunleye revealed some early signs about his future.

The 58 years old chief said despite being born into Islamic household, Iba Adams never hide his deep love for Yoruba tradition as he took special interest in Aribisewa,  formost masquerade in his father’s lineage despite occasional opposition from his late dad, Pa Lamidi Adams.

His ascendancy to leadership according to the 69 years old, Mrs Ogunleye was divine.

She said as infant, whenever Aare Adams surfaced among his peers, they always deferred him as their chief.

“Wherever he goes in the town even as infant, kids would surround him and give him an object as insignia of leadership.

“They always deferred to him as their chief and leader. It was amazing to us at first but as time goes on we came to realize that he was divinely chosen as warrior and leader.

“As leader of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), he knows the exact spot to appease to the gods and goddesses of ocean in Lagos called Olokun and he does that at intervals.

“So passionate about helping others particularly the needy. Knock on his gate anytime he won’t turn you back unlike other big men that would ordered their entrance locked”.

Zaki of Arigidi Akoko, Oba Yisa Olanipekun believes the exploits of the generalissimo dated back to the regime of General Ibrahim Gbadamosi Babangida as military Head of States since 1992 as activist were clear indications that God preserved him for the exalted position.

Then, popularly known as Otunba Gani Adams, he was a leading foot soldier among the civil society groups agitating for democratic rule and emancipation of Yoruba nation from the marginalisation.

“Even if there was a jinx that the Kakanfos don’t live long, Iba Adams will break it. People have said a lot of things about the office of Aare Ona Kakanfo, I can confidently tell you that he wi live to the fullest of his days by the grace of God.

“My predecessor gave him the title of Otunba. His selection as Aare Ona Kakanfo was divine. He believes in Yoruba culture and has been doing everything within his powers to promote it without prompting. Whoever wishes him dead will face the wrath of the gods instantly.

“We were not close before my appointment as Zaki. He came to saying he had reseached into my personalty and that he would back my candidature. Truly he did.

“Iba Adams single handly built and furnished a palace for me and had sponsored me to over 39 countries under the aegis of his Oodua Progressive Union (OPU) to promote Yoruba culture.

“Many Arigidi sons and daughters are beneficiaries of his schorlaship scheme. Any time he is the state, motorcyclists and other transporters would line up from Akungba Akoko to accompany him home. So humbly that he would pay homage to all the Obas in Akoko one after the other before retiring home.

“Sometimes, I would personally tell him to keep aside money to fuel his cars otherwise he would run out cash because he give without condition to anyone. He is a blessing to Akoko, Yoruba and entire Nigeria.

“In Arigidi, he is the chief promoter of Okota festival and several others traditional festivals across the Yoruba nation. Long life is his portion and so shall it be” Oba Olanipekun prayed.

Despite his arrest and detentions at different times, he never looked back on his mission.

Emeritus Anglican Bishop Ayo Ladigbolu buttressed the uniqueness of his emergence as Aare Ona Kakanfo thus:

“It wa a unique installation because God worked through the initiative of the most respected traditional ruler in his 47th year on the throne to identify the talents, courage and zeal in Gani Adams and subsequently appointed him as Aare Ona Kakanfo.”

  • The bishop also noted that:

He epitomizes gallantry and courage. He is a leader created by God to liberate his people. Despite all that he faced in the hands of both the military and civilian governments, he was prepared to die for the comfort of the Yorubas. He was ready to face the oppressors despite the size of the army. He ensured that all the Yoruba nations sleep with their eyes closed. So if God used the instrumentality of the most respected monarch to fulfill his purpose by installing Iba Ganiyu Adams as the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, who is that person quarrelling with that? Yoruba nation has many wars to contend with. Although it is clear that we are not fighting convention war but the instruments of war these days are scientific and physiological. What is raining now as potent tools of war are aristocracies of connection and knowledge. The present Aare Ona Kakanfo posses such qualities to lead the Yoruba nation to the Promisedland, all he needs is to affirm his belief in almighty God and he will live to the fullest of his days.  While those who were not comfortable with his selection described him as “a street fighter, thug among other derogatory languages, on the contrary, Aare Adams remains a fighter of a just cause. We have asked, has he ever killed anyone or indicted for any criminal act? The answer was no.
