The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Abiodun Ige Adams is set to mark the one year anniversary of his installation.
He was announced as successor to the late business mogul, Aare MKO Abiola 20 years after his demise by Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi (111) last year at an elaborate occasion in the ancient city of Oyo.
During a chat with TheLead Online, the Aare affirmed his desire to use his position to unite the entire Yorubaland and consolidate on the title in line with the tradition of his people by focusing on promotion of their culture.
According to the chairman of the Kakanfo Anniversary Committee, Dr Adebiyi Phillips, various activities including a documentary on Aare Adams childhood till date had been lined up to make the occasion memorably.
The event will start on January 9, 2019 with the launching of two books titled: Gani Adams: Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland; and Voice of media, voice of people, in his honour by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council.
Speaking on why the union decided to author the books, the Lagos NUJ, chairman, Dr Qasim Akinreti explained that the body took the step as parts of the renaissance of Yoruba culture which Gani Adams had been championing.
The unionist added that the NUJ was also impressed with his notable contributions to national development in the recent years.
On Thursday January 10, 2019 by 12.000 noon, the final of the maiden edition of Aare Onakakanfo Football Competition will hold at the legacy pitch of the National Stadium, Lagos while debate and quiz competitions on Yoruba language takes place with the launching of a book comprising Yoruba 1000 proverbs at the TCC Event Center Opposite Polaris Bank, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Ikeja on Friday, January 11.
Aare Gani will confer chieftaincy titles on 17 notable personalities across the Southwest on Saturday, January 12, as members of Aare Onakakanfo Cabinet at 10 Degrees Event Center, Billings Way, Oregun Ikeja by 10 am.
The grand finale of the anniversary comes up on January 13 at the Grandview Event Center, Oregun, Ikeja with reception for dignitaries.
Meanwhile, top media executives have expressed readiness to support the anniversary.
The commitment was given during a courtesy call on management of media outfits based in Ibadan, Oyo State on Friday by Aare’s delegation
The delegation was led by the Chairman of Lagos NUJ.
Receiving the delegation at the African Newspapers of Nigeria, the publishers of the Nigerian Tribune, the management lauded the initiate of the team.
Managing Director/Editor In Chief of Nigerian Tribune, Mr Edward Ighere Dickson said the organization was proud of Gani Adams.
“Aare Adams is a friend of the Nigerian Tribune. He is a creation of the media. I am proud to tell those who were always quick to attribute negative occurrences in the country to the media, that we made Gani Adams what he is today. He is our good product.
“Gani is a man I will describe in Yoruba parlance as “iwa loba awure”, that is, good character is a virtue. All Nigerian journalists are at home with him because he is friendly. You can count on Tribune newspapers for support any day anytime on Gani Adams.
At Radio Nigeria Premier FM 93.5, the General Manager of the station, Reverend Oluniyi Dahunsi praised the Aare Onakakanfo for his commitment to promotion of Yoruba culture.
He assured on the readiness of his establishment to support the event.
Mr Kayode Akinsola, former Oyo State NUJ Chairman and the General Manager of Kings 103.9 FM, said Gani had carved a niche for himself long before his appointment. He recalled his antecedents as activist, social crusader and leader of Oodua People’s Congress.
While pledging to mobilize his men to support the occasion, he said Gani deserved the honour as a worthy personality in Yorubaland.
Mr Tunde Olawuwo, the General Manager of Splash FM 105, singled out the Aare Onakakanfo as a cultural icon who was never shy to showcase the tradition of his people.
He also said his station was willing to give backings to the event.
The delegation comprised, Dr Adebiyi Philips, Mr Dotun Oladipo, the Managing Director of Eagle Online and Head, Media Committee of Aare Onakakanfo Installation Anniversary, Ajibola Abayomi, the Managing Director/ Editor In Chief, TheLead publications, publishers of TheLead Online and TheLead Magazine and Mr Adegbola Kolawole, a member of Lagos NUJ publications committee.
The team was supported by the Vice President of NUJ, B Zone, Mr Cosmos Oni and Oyo State NUJ Chairman, Mr Adewunmi Faniran.
