The apex pan Yoruba social political group, Afenifere has lashed at Oluwo of Iwo Land, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Akanbi who recently adopted the title of an Emir.
The monarch stunned many at occasion in his palace where he turbaned himself and pronounced r himself as Emir of Yoruba Land against his title, Oluwo of Iwo.
Although speaking through his media aide, Mr. Ali Ibrahim, in a statement issued on Sunday, the Oluwo explained that he had never dropped the title of an Oba for an emir.
The monarch has been dressing like an emir and wearing turban occasionally and he again wore the turban on Saturday when he installed Yakub Abdul-Baqi Mohhamed the Waziri of Yorubaland in his palace in Iwo.
He installed the Waziri, allegedly despite the warning given to him by the League of Imams and Alfas in South West, Edo and Delta states, that he had no such powers to confer an Islamic title, which cuts across the entire South West, on anybody.
The statement read, “Oluwo has never adopted the Emir title; he only said he could also be called an Emir by the Hausas and ardent Muslims.
“Oba Akanbi is an Oba for the nation, with special attachment to the Yorubas. He promotes Yoruba culture to the admiration of many youths.
“Just because of Oluwo dress code today, many children are attracted to Yoruba culture of wearing aso ofi.
“I said so (reference to being an emir) to integrate Nigeria nation as an indivisible entity. All working tools are available for the integration and unity of our dear country.
“I’ve visited the North several times. Core Hausa hardly pronounce Yoruba words correctly. They call me emir when I am with them. Is there anything wrong in answering to such?
“Even, the Hausa in Iwo here call me emir. Will I stop them from addressing me as such?
Speaking with The LeadOnline during an exclusive interview on telephone, the Spokesman of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin described the action of the monarch as “most embarrassing thing in the history of Yoruba race.
“Here is a man that people were looking at and weeping, yet he laughs at his himself. What a shame and abomination that he could take a joke so far. If he doesn’t renounce the nonsense he was calling himself, the kingmakers should commence the process of impeaching him.
“He had the gut to turban himself and claimed that whenever he visited the north that the Emirs there do call him Emir of the Yorubas. What an abnormality and a misfit to occupy the respected office of Oluwo. Ask him, how many Emirs in the north will answer the title of an Oba?
“The kingmakers should remove him from office if he didn’t stop parading himself as an Emir. This is Yoruba Land and not Hausa or Fulani territory. That monarch is a disgrace to himself. He should be prepared to go” Odumakin said.
