Customs: FOU Rakes N1Bn, Frustrates Smugglers Again

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Ikeja has recorded another landmark seizure thereby forcing the smugglers to wail in the month of May again just like it happened in March this year.

The value of the seizure was put at total of N1, 039,156,454.00 being a cumulative of revenue collected since April 10 May 16 this year.

This was disclosed by Comptroller of the unit, Mohammed Uba while briefing the media at the Unit headquarters Ikeja recently.

He said having deepened the anti-smuggling operations, the FOU have intercepted contrabands and other goods seized several goods with Duty Paid Value (DPU) of N1,010,295,666.2.

The detained items according to him included 30 exotic vehicles, 5,516 bags of foreign rice loaded in nine trailers some of which were partitioned to deceive customs officers.

Others seized goods were 226 jerrycans of vegetable oil, 173 bales of used clothing, 683 pieces of used tyres, 8 sacks of Indian Hemp weighing 134 KG.

The FOU also seized two containers with registration numbers MSKU130295/2 and MRKU877714/0  apprehended for false declaration with DPU of over N25 million.

A total of 14 suspects were arrested in connection to the seizures.

The Comptroller bemoaned the rate of smuggling in the country and pledged to continue to frustrate the smugglers who he termed economic saboteurs.

He said, “we will continue to make this zone uncomfortable for smugglers to operate and l urge every Nigerian to be patriotic and report any smuggling activities in their areas to the customs and any intelligence provided will be treated in confidence.”
