NUJ Wants Abiola Declared As Ex-President

Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare the winner of the annulled June 12, Presidential Election, late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola as former president of the country.

The council made the pronouncement at the 25th anniversary of the poll adjudged to be the freest in the nation it organized in Lagos in collaboration with the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) on Tuesday.

Speaking, the chairman of the council, Dr Qasim Akinreti stated that history would be kind to the president for the honour given to MKO and those at the forefront of actualization of the June 12 struggle.

He however demanded that union wanted more to be done so that justice could be served on the matter

His words: On behalf of the NUJ and all journalists in Nigeria, we hereby demand that the house of MKO Abiola be converted to presidential library not the usual library around, that the result of the June 12, 1993 presidential election be released formally and that Chief MKO be declared as former president of Nigeria.”

Akinreti also demanded that all the benefits of ex-president should be paid to the family of the deceased.

“The election was adjudged as the freest in the history of the nation. There was no need to deny the winner the benefits. The irony of today is that the military junta under General Ibrahim Babangida though they could kill the June 12 spirit but that was to be.”

“What is happening at the moment is a lesson to everyone to remain consistent on whatever one believes in and one day it will surely pay off” Akinreti said.
