Ambode, Reps, NUJ Hail Jakande At 89

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode led cream of personalities to salute the first elected governor of the state, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande as he marked his 89th birthday on Monday.

Governor Ambode described him as a man of integrity who epitomized excellence and honesty.

The governor was represented by Commissioner of Home Affairs, Dr Abdul-Hakeem Mobolaji Abdul-Lateef.

The commissioner paid tribute to the former governor while reading a letter signed by Governor Ambode saying, “the footprint of Alhaji Jakande remains a reference point in Lagos and by extension Nigeria.

“You gave a good account of yourself while in office and to us you a governor of governors”.

Former House of Representatives members, Hon Lanre Odubote from Epe and his counterpart, Hon Yomi Ogunnusi, from Ifako-Ijaiye said Jakande legacies remained a gold to behold.

Odubote said, the erstwhile governor was an asset to the nation and a politician of note.

“Babakekere (Jaknade) was an action governor and a man of many parts. I am proud to be a member of Jakande Committee of Friends. Either in the area of welfare, transportation and housing, none can be comparable to Jakande.

“He is the last man standing out of the Awolowo political dynasty. He is very sound and articulate. One cannot but celebrate the icon of politics of honesty and purpose.

“He started Lagos rail project. If the military had allowed him Lagos would have been a leading economy in the world today.”

Ogunnusi said, it was a rare grace for someone of Jakande’s stature to attain such age saying “ I congratulate and wish him many more years in good health.”

Chairman of Lagos Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Dr Qasim Akinreti described the former governor as a pillar of journalism in Nigeria.

Akinreti who also conveyed the message of National President of NUJ, Waheed Odusile to the celebrant, said the union was indebted to him in several ways.

“Today Jakande has made us proud as a body. One of the most important sources of fund available to the Lagos NUJ from 1982 till date was made possible by him. For that we remain grateful to him.

“Baba is our role model. We shall continue to celebrate. Our prayer is that by the time he marks his 90th birthday, we shall be here to celebrate with him.”
