Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State chapter on Saturday protested the scandal rocking NAWOJ/NUJ Housing scheme.
The association stormed the July Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos Council calling on the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to speedily effect the trial of the NAWOJ, National Chairperson, Mrs Ifeyinwa Omowole and other accused in the deal.
The scheme described as fraud by the Lagos NAWOJ chair person, Sekinat Lawal had been foot dragging for years under the leadership of NAWOJ, Omowole and other officers indicted by the committee set up by the Lagos NUJ to investigate the matter.
Mrs Omowole was said to have among other things withdrew $24,000 US dollars which was not properly accounted for and some of other monies deposited by subscribers into the project that comprised members of Lagos State NUJ and NAWOJ.
The NAWOJ National Chairperson who is currently on administrative bail of the EFCC had already written a petition faulting the decision of Lagos NUJ Committee report that recommended her trial by law enforcing agent to the National Executive Council of NUJ to set up another committee to review the report.
Sekinat said continued delay of the matter by NUJ NEC was not tenable as court is the final arbiter on matters of law.
