FOU Confiscates Codeine, Arrests 25, Recovers Over N2 Bn From Smugglers

The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A has impounded various contraband with a Duty Paid Value (DPU) of Two billion, Fifty Five Million, Three hundred and Twenty One Thousand, Three Hundred And Eighty Nine Naira, Eighty Four K obo.(N2.055,321,389,.84) in two weeks.

17 fleets of cars were also recovered from smugglers while 25 persons were arrested in connection with different seizures by the command.

Notably among the seizures according to the Controller of FOU, Mohammed Uba included a truck with registration number XB 286 BEN accosted along Igbueleri junction, close to Alaba international containing  DSP Codeine Cough Syrup of 100 milegrams packs, 100 per carton as well as Chaka pain extra based on information.

He said that the 49 cartons of 100 milligrams of tramadol impounded would be handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control, NAFDAC.

According to him, other seized items within the period are, “21sacks of pangolin scales weighing 1,031 kilogram and four pieces of elephant tusk weighing 29.35 kilogram from a shop located in Tejosho market in Yaba based on information by the warehouse operations team.

“The seized endangered species have a DPV of N253.6 million while the items were seized because the trade on endangered species in globally prohibited,hence the need for us all to fight against such illegality .”

Uba explained that the unit also intercepted “one Ford Transit bus conveying 39 sacks and 1,220 parcels of cannabis sativa popularly known as Indian hemp weighing 1,610 kilograms concealed with baskets of fresh tomato’s, pepper and vegetables.

“The items would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA for further investigation.

“Other seized items includes 17 units of exotic vehicles, 1,380 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 1,126 pieces of used shoes and 140 jerry cans of vegetable oil and  Eight suspects were arrested in connection with these seizures .”
