The Journalists International Forum For Migration, JIFORM, has saluted the doggedness of the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Lagos State Council, Dr Qasim Olalere Akinreti, as he marks his two years in office.
The body also praised members of the Lagos NUJ for being proactive and for the unflinching supports for the elected officers of the union.
A statement issued and signed on Friday in Abuja by the President of JIFORM, Ajibola Abayomi, described the NUJ chairman as a courageous unionist with incomparable achievements within a short time.
“Since inception of his administration, he left no one in doubt about his ability to deliver on his manifestoes and promises. I was personally involved both during his campaign and the process leading to the draft of his manifestoes. Today, I look back, I can’t imagine how time flies and the speedy transformation of the Lagos NUJ.
“Here is Akinreti that championed new era on media investment in agriculture, trainings for journalists, integrity, transparency, accountability and recovery of the Lagos NUJ property illegally ceded in a very controversial and shameful manner leaving pains and sorrows on the lips of many living and dead journalists. All that have been achieved within two years.
“He has broken the over 10 years jinx regarding the handing over of land purchased by thousands of journalists at Abaren in Ogun State. Even those that duped and cheated Lagos Journalists on the imaginary Pen Juwel Estate now know that soon nemesis and law will catch up with them.
“Akinreti’s achievements particularly regarding the on-going remodeling of Lagos NUJ Secretariat which was not even listed among his priorities during the campaigns are visibly to the blind and audible to the deaf. A whooping N25 million sourced from the Lagos State government was wholly spent on the project unlike funds sourced to reshape the Union’s property at Shomolu in Lagos, years ago. What a pity!
“The complete attitudinal change of the Lagos NUJ monthly Congress with improved services to members particularly interventions concerning the welfare for the needy journalists are very exciting. We need not to list the beneficiaries assisted with surgery and maternity bills.
“Hundreds of Lagos journalists have benefitted from trainings and re-training both within and outside the state. JIFORM is a testimony of an idea generated in one of the training programmes facilitated by the union with a group of international media trainers in 2018. Today JIFORM is a global professional body on its own.
“We are bold to say that Akinreti’s achievements and Lagos NUJ exco are unprecedented because, as active members of the NUJ, many of us were involved both during the planning and execution of various lofty ideas that have transformed the union beyond the common level” said the JIFORM President.
Ajibola added that “to say that the Lagos Council under Akinreti is the most vibrant state chapter of the NUJ is a statement of fact.
“We look forward to more fulfilling activities under the Lagos NUJ as we call on both the Federal and Lagos State governments to tap from these excellent deliveries in the service to the humanity.
“When we have reputable personalities with talents like this particularly from the media, our undoing is that we undermine such potential because of jealousy and inability to give honour to whom honour is due.
“In many instances, we always fail to stand by real performer as unionists by craving in to mediocrity as evident among the political class. That pitfall must be avoided no matter the gimmicks of the fifth columnists with parochial views and limited visions.
Long live Nigeria and the Great NUJ.”
