How NUJ Joined COVID-19 Food Taskforce-Isiguzo

Ajibola Abayomi,

President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has given an insight into how the NUJ became part taskforce on emergency response on COVID-19 regarding challenges of free movement of food.

On April 22, 2020, the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development  inaugurated a seven-member Joint Technical Task Team, Emergency Response on COVID 19 on the challenges of movement of food and agricultural inputs in the country.

The seven members included, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Operations as chairman, Assistant Comptroller General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, representative of the Nigerian Army, President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, President of All Farmers Association of Nigeria, the Director of Planning, Federal Ministry of Agriculture as Secretary and the President of the NUJ

Isiguzo recalled that : ‘At our inaugural meeting, we felt the need to replicate same committee at the State and Local Government levels in order to make the work a lot easier. It’s on that basis that our council chairmen in the 36 States have been appointed into the Committees at the State level to coordinate the assignment at that level.

“This is indeed a call to service as we are expected to ensure that we give the Union a positive image while carrying out this national assignment. We are very much aware of the impact of this rampaging Coronavirus pandemic on the nation and as such it requires collective efforts to contain same.

“We must bear in mind that we are all representing the Union and must put the Union first in all we do. Let’s also continue to abide by all the health guidelines endorsed by the World Health Organisation and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).”

He congratulated the NUJ state chairmen and wish them well in the service to the nation.
