NIS: FG Extends Babandede’s Tenure, JIFORM Applauds

President Muhammad Buhari has extended the tenure of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, (NIS), Muhammad Babandede, MFR.

The CGI assumed office in 2016 and had been a source of inspiration to the service.

Journalists International Forum For Migration, JIFORM, reliably gathered from  presidential sources on Friday that Babandede whose leadership had inspired the agency to massive achievements and revolutions had gotten approval to continue his good works.

Earlier in the year, the NIS won the prestigious presidency most reformed agency award in Nigeria apart from several international laurels.

Parts of the outstanding reforms that may have earned him the extension are introduction of E-migrant registration, that allowed many irregular migrants to regularised their status in the country instead of facing deportation.

Others include the launch of 2020 Visa policy that gave room for issurance of visa on arrival in Nigeria.

The nation now has 69 different visa categories. Also under Babandede, NIS witnessed complete digitarisation of border management and other operations, introduction of digital 10-year Nigerian international passport and over 60 training programmes had been initiated for NIS officers.

Ajibola Abayomi, JIFORM President described the presidency’s action as a commendable one based on merit.

“We applaud this decision as a welcome development. Babandede is a man that placed premium on service to the nation since 2016 as CGI rather than personal ego or tribal sentiments.

“The first international migration conference held by JIFORM in Abuja in 2019, the first journalists body to do so in the world received his blessings. Other than subjecting us to undue office politics like others, he whole heartedly gave us support.

“This is the kind of people we need in government that will always support creative ideas instead of seeking undue personal credit. JIFORM congratulates him and we wish him the very best as CGI” he said.
